Nurturing Nature, Empowering Lives

Since 2015, Katonda Afaayo Foundation has been on a mission to restore Uganda’s green heritage while creating sustainable pathways for our youth.

Katonda Afaayo Foundation was established to respond to the growing impact of climate change on communities in Uganda. We believe that climate action must begin at the grassroots with informed, empowered communities leading solutions that protect the environment while improving livelihoods and health.

We are a non-governmental organization

Our Roots & Aspirations

Katonda Afaayo (Luganda for “The Creator Cares”) was born from a simple observation: the rapid disappearance of Uganda’s forests was stealing the future of the next generation. We believe that environmental restoration and youth economic empowerment are two sides of the same coin.

Our beginnings

When a tree is cut, it doesn’t just release a lifetime of stored carbon it destroys entire webs of life, visible and invisible. Planting one, by contrast, is like raising a child: you watch it grow and it fills you with quiet joy.

Emily brought her conviction to fellow foundation members, who embraced it wholeheartedly. With volunteers and well-wishers behind her, what began as a personal reckoning in a vanished forest has grown into a shared mission.

Growing up, Emily spent her school holidays at her grandmother’s home beside Kalungi Forest in Kiwumu, Mukono District, collecting firewood, gathering medicinal herbs, and fetching water. That closeness to the forest taught her early that every living thing is connected, from the smallest insect to the birds overhead.

Years later, she returned to find the forest almost entirely gone — cleared for farmland. Standing there, she could still hear it in her memory: wind through leaves, birdsong, monkeys, the clean smell of forest air. That moment changed everything.

We Don't Just Plant Trees. We Rebuild Ecosystems.

Because forests, people, and futures are inseparable.
