The Deforestation Crisis in Uganda

Uganda’s fast-growing population is putting immense pressure on forests. More firewood, farmland, and settlements mean trees are disappearing at an alarming rate.
By 2024, 31,900 hectares of forest were lost, releasing 10.5 million tons of CO₂. Uganda now faces one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, with forests cleared for charcoal and farmland—harming wildlife, farmers, and future generations.

Across Africa, forests cover 17% of the planet, yet deforestation here is happening four times faster than the global average. Communities and ecosystems are at risk.

Thanks to the Katonda Afaayo Foundation’s Restoration Initiative, Uganda and Africa are working toward a greener, healthier future. Together, we can restore forests, protect biodiversity, and secure livelihoods.
